General Info about Nuance Audio™ Plus

Nuance Audio™ Plus is a medical device. Not a mere "sound amplifier", but a proper medical device (can we make this claim). They are spectacle frames embedded with groundbreaking technology which seamlessly integrate an air conduction hearing aid (Medical Device Class IIa, sold as over-the-counter "OTC" Hearing Aid, in Australia/New Zealand) intended to amplify sound for adult users (18yrs and older) with a perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment. Nuance Audio™ Plus, if necessary, are to be used in association with prescription lenses for those adults who also require correction of visual defects.
Nuance Audio™ Plus can be worn all day and must be easily configured via the App to adapt to any situation, from business meetings to family time.

In Australia and New Zealand, Nuance Audio™ Plus delivers hearing amplification for adults (18 years and older) with mild to moderate hearing impairment, without the need to see a hearing care professional.

Nuance Audio™ Plus doesn not need a prescription from an audiologist and a hearing test is not required for purchasing. Finally, users must be 18+ years to be eligible for purchase.

These glasses feature an innovative microphone array and groundbreaking directional amplification technology, creating a focused beam in the direction you are looking. The sound in this targeted area is amplified, while the surrounding areas remain unaffected. This results in maximum amplification for the person directly in front of you, effectively addressing the challenge of understanding speech in noisy environments for those with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment loss.  Our advanced directional amplification technology, coupled with open ears and natural sound, allows you to effortlessly catch up on sounds that may be missed, especially in noisy surroundings. Nuance Audio™ Plus not only offers comfort and convenience but also ensures high-performance sound quality. 

Nuance Audio™ Plus can be used as a OTC hearing aid for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss impairment. Currently it is not made to be used in conjunction with hearing aids.  

The Nuance Audio Hearing Aid Software is compatible with Nuance Audio™ Plus and delivers the same amplification to each ear. Once you have chosen a preset based on your listening preference (A, B, C, or D), you may also adjust the volume setting to meet your hearing needs.
NOTE: It is recommended that you see a doctor, preferably an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor, if you have perceived worse hearing in one ear before using an OTC hearing aid.

Nuance Audio™ Plus are not intended to help in cases of tinnitus. However, studies show that the use of hearing aids may assist in reducing the perceptual burden of tinnitus, due to acoustic masking. In that case, you may perceive your tinnitus less when using the glasses, as you will receive more amplification of external sounds around you.

Yes. Nuance Audio™ Plus provides significant benefits for people without hearing loss. People with normal hearing may seek more speaker clarity in challenging situations and noisy environments. While some people may not struggle to understand speech, they might still seek some relief from the listening effort that is usually required when holding a conversation in a noisy environment, or with multiple speakers. This is where Nuance Audio™ Plus steps in. Nuance Audio™ Plus is beneficial as they amplify sounds coming from the direction the listener is facing, thus improving how loud the target speaker can be heard as compared to the surroundings. 

There are several differences between Nuance Audio™ Plus and traditional hearing aids:
• Style: Nuance Audio™ Plus relies on EssilorLuxottica R&D skills, craftmanship capabilities and design expertise. As a result, Nuance Audio™ Plus seamlessly integrates its technology within a stylish frame.
• Comfort: People who use other OTC or traditional hearing aids tend to complain about discomfort in the ear canal. Nuance Audio™ Plus offers vision and hearing benefits in one seamless product. The open-ear solution eliminates the discomfort commonly associated with inside-the-ear traditional aids.
• Directionality: This allows the listener to focus on the speaker they are facing, when used in "Frontal" audio mode. For those times when you prefer to experience your surroundings without emphasizing the front, Nuance Audio™ Plus offers also the “All-around” audio mode, which amplifies without utilizing the directional algorithm.
• Simplicity: As no fitting/configuration are required, you can adjust your Nuance Audio™ Plus settings from your Nuance Audio™ App very easily. Nuance Audio™ Plus has been designed to be very simple to use and does not require customers to be tech-savvy. You can easily configure Nuance Audio™ Plus via the companion Nuance Audio™ App choosing the (i) preset program (four options available) that best suits your profile, as well as further personalizing the hearing support by playing with (ii) "volume", (iii) "background noise" and (iv) "audio mode" settings. • Accessibility : Unlike traditional hearing aids, Nuance Audio™ Plus is an Over-the-Counter product that can be bought directly in store. Hearing tests and hearing status certification are not required.

 Yes! Nuance Audio™ Plus are around one quarter of the cost of an average traditional non-OTC hearing aid.  They can also turn into a 2-in-1 solution as Nuance Audio™ Plus are able to carry prescription lenses (at an additional cost). Hence, your total costs may be less than purchasing equivalent prescription glasses and non-OTC hearing aids separately.

No, the glasses do not use bone conduction, but air conduction. They use speakers embedded in the frame, near your ears.

The people who are close around you (at a casual distance) should not hear or be distrubed by the amplified sounds.

When watching TV, the effectiveness of the product depends on acoustic variables like the direction of the speakers, the location of the TV (near/far from the wall) and other factors. We recommend you watch TV with the audio on (try both "frontal" and "all-around" audio modes) and see if that helps.

While this may vary depending on your surroundings (such as the absence of barriers and background noise), Nuance Audio™ Plus' amplification of nearby sounds is estimated to have a range up to 9 feet / 3 meters.

Before using your Nuance Audio™ Plus, we recommend reviewing the Quick Start Guide included in the package. You can also access and download it in the Learning Center.

As a summary:

1. Download the Nuance Audio™ App
Scan the QR code located inside the packaging lid and in the Glasses Quick Start Guide, or search for the App on Google Play Store or Apple Store. Then install the App on your mobile device.

Additional details about how to perform these activities (downloading/installing the App) are included in the Troubleshooting guide.

Please bear in mind that the Nuance Audio™ App will be available:
• For iPhone users on the App Store, compatible from iOS 16, release version 0.3.7 and later
• For Android users on the Google Play Store, compatible from Android 12 with SDK 24, release version 0.4.1 and later

2. Open the App and create an account or log in to your existing Nuance Audio™ account. If you purchase the Nuance Audio™ Remote Plus and use it without the App, this step should be performed by the store associate.

3. Pair your Glasses
Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your Nuance Audio™ Plus to your mobile device via Bluetooth.

4. Calibrate your Glasses
 In a silent room, calibrate your Glasses by following the guided steps to adapt to your head shape and begin to recognize your voice.

5. Set up phone calls
Access the Settings page of your iPhone and enable phone calls as per the instructions provided in the FAQ: “How can I set up my phone for calls?”

6. Complete the tutorial
Familiarize yourself with the Glasses controls and key App functions by following the in-App tutorial. Additional information about key App functions can be found in the Learning Center.

7. Upgrade your Glasses
 If notified by the onboarding flow, upgrade firmware and/or audio prompt languages loaded in your Nuance Audio™ Plus.

You're now ready to enjoy your Nuance Audio™ Plus! Personalize your experience further using the App audio settings. To get familiar with Nuance Audio™ Plus settings, please consult the Learning Center.

After completing the necessary preliminary steps, and ensuring the Nuance Audio™ App is correctly installed on your phone, we suggest following these recommendations to optimize your hearing support:

1. Calibrate your Glasses
If you haven't done so yet, calibrate your hearing Glasses to tailor them to your voice and head shape. Please remember to complete this process in a silent room.

2. Customize your settings in the App:

• Presets: Choose between four presets (A, B, C, or D) that adapt to your hearing needs and environment for a better sound experience
• Volume levels: Adjust the volume levels to suit your preferences
• Background noise: Decide how much background noise you want to hear —  lowered, standard, or heightened
• Audio mode, choose between:

* Frontal mode: focus amplification on sounds coming from the front
* All-around mode: Amplify sounds or speech from all directions

Important notes:

• Adjustment period:
It may take a short time to get accustomed to the new amplification, but typically no longer than a few days. It is common to perceive your own voice differently. These sensations are normal and should diminish as you adapt to improved audibility.

• Don’t worry:
If the sound feels unnatural initially, remember that this is a normal part of the adjustment process, and you will become accustomed to it with regular use.

To turn the Glasses on/off, switch the slider button on the right temple forward/backward. An audio prompt will confirm that the Glasses are turned on/off.

Also, when the slider button is already on, folding the temples puts the Glasses into sleep mode to save battery. When you unfold the Glasses, they automatically turn on.

The Nuance Audio™ Plus feature a slider button and “+” and “–” buttons, all located on the right temple. These buttons allow you to perform the following actions:

• Power on/off: Use the slider button to turn Nuance Audio™ Plus on or off

• Volume control: Press “+” or “–” button to increase or decrease volume

• Presets: Press and hold “+” or “–” button for 1.25 seconds to switch between presets

• 2nd pair pairing: To pair a second pair of Nuance Audio™ Plus to the same account, press and hold “+” or “–” button for 8 seconds

• Force shutdown: Press and hold “+” button for 12 seconds

• Factory reset: Press and hold the“+” and “–” buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds

Additionally, you can switch between audio modes (Frontal and All-around) and answer or end calls (if this shortcut is enabled) by double tapping the tap area located on the right frame, if this shortcut is enabled in the App.

Shortcuts are quick commands that let you control your Nuance Audio™ Plus directly from the frame, without using the App.

The following shortcuts are available:

• Double tap: Switch between Audio Modes or answer and end calls
• Change presets: Press and hold for 1.25 seconds the "+" or "−" button to switch between presets

To enable shortcuts:

1. Open the Nuance Audio™ App on your mobile device
2. Tap the Menu icon in the bottom-right corner of the Home page
2.  Select "Settings"
3. Select Shortcuts
4. Turn the Shortcuts toggle on "Doulbe Tap" and "Change Presets"

The Nuance Audio™ Plus and the Charging Pad contain magnetic material and components that emit radio waves, which could affect the operation of medical devices such as but not limited
to pacemakers or insulin pumps, or other implantable devices, consult your doctor or the medical device manufacturer before using the Nuance Audio™ Plus and the Charging Pad.

If you have an active or inactive implant device (e.g. defibrillator, pacemaker), follow the implant manufacturer’s instructions regarding the use of mobile devices. The Nuance Audio™ Plus should be kept at least 6 inches from implantable pacemakers. In the event of malfunctions, stop using your Nuance Audio™ Plus and contact your doctor or the implant manufacturer. If you have an active brain implant, ask your doctor or the implant manufacturer for a risk analysis.
